Honolulu’s former top permit inspector pleads guilty to bribery

Wayne Inouye pleaded guilty in federal court today to accepting over $100,000 in bribes to expedite permits between 2012 and 2017. He admitted he took the money in exchange for providing preferential treatment to several Department of Planning and Permitting customers. The case is part of a broader scandal that began with indictments against him and four other DPP employees last year.

Navy water system sees fourth main break as boil water advisory remains for about 93,000 users

Another main break to the Navy’s water system was reported Monday as crews work frantically to restore service. A Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam official confirmed that the water main break in Pearl City Peninsula was related to ongoing problems with the system. At least three homes in the area have experienced flooding.

Supreme Court rejects appeal to give people born in American Samoa U.S. citizenship


American Samoa is the only unincorporated U.S. territory where residents are not American citizens at birth. Instead, those born in the cluster of islands some 2,600 miles southwest of Hawai‘i are granted “U.S. national” status, meaning they can’t vote for U.S. president, run for office outside American Samoa or apply for certain jobs.

Watch: Large shark swims among surfers in ‘Ewa Beach waters


Drone video captured a 6-to-8 foot shark lurking among surfers yesterday near One‘ula Beach Park. The footage shows the shark swimming directly under a surfer, who catches a wave right past the dorsal fin. The animal does not appear to be acting aggressively.
