UH proposes tuition increase in 2025, 2026

The phased plan suggests raising tuition rates by 2% for students at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the start of the 2024 academic year and undergrads at three of its universities in 2025. Currently, tuition for resident undergrads at UH Mānoa stands at $5,652 and $16,668 for non-resident, full-time students. For UH Mānoa's law school it's $11,196 for residents and $22,908 for non-residents.

Researchers use drones to understand how waves are shifting Waikīkī beach

UH researchers learned the sand appears to move from one end of the beach to the other — not to and from offshore, as previously believed. This was based on weekly drone surveys between 2018 to 2020. Scientists took overlapping images and recreated the beach into a 3D model from which they were able to measure things like the beach volume and how the sand moves.

Kauaʻi putting together reentry transition packs for those leaving prison


Life’s Choices, a program that works to reduce drug use and antisocial behaviors on the island, received a $5,000 Hawai‘i State Rural Health Association microgrant to make reentry transition packs for individuals exiting prison. The packs will contain bus passes, taxi vouchers, gift cards and a list of resources helpful with the transition.

Authorities asking for help identifying 2 men accused of damaging Honolulu rail cars


Surveillance video shows the pair trespassing in a restricted area behind Leeward Community College on Oct. 9 around 3 a.m. Officials said they damaged the two rail cars then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

New grant programs aim to strengthen Kaua‘i’s food system

Local food systems nonprofit Mālama Kaua‘i has partnered with the County of Kaua‘i Office of Economic Development on two Innovation Grants that will be distributing funds to support food system expansion on Kaua‘i. $50,000 will be available to Kaua‘i farmers selling into food access channels and $40,000 in local food donations will be available to Kaua‘i schools that want to pilot farm to school efforts.
