TOP STORYState legislature passes bill with $200 million for expanding preschool accessThe Hawaiʻi State Legislature passed six bills that invest $220 million in education, with $200 million appropriated for the goal of expanding preschool access to all 3- and 4-year olds by 2032. The $220 million is in addition to the $2.4 billion in the Department of Education’s most recent budget. The bills were sent to Gov. David Ige for his consideration. Lunar eclipse happening on SundayThis weekend, skywatchers will be in for a special treat when a total lunar eclipse happens again. It’s the first since May 2021. However, officials said that we won’t be able to see the red hue of the eclipse. Instead, there will be a dark shadow that will retreat across the face of the Moon as it leaves the umbra — the darkest part of Earth’s shadow — over the hour after moonrise. KHON2 City to mark ‘Lahaina noon’ with celebration at iconic Sky Gate sculptureNative Hawaiian composer and violinist Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti will premiere a new work this month inspired by Lahaina noon. The Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts commissioned the composition together with Chamber Music Hawaii. The chamber will perform the work at noon on May 26. Lahaina noon refers to the moment when the sun passes exactly overhead at midday and objects with smooth sides appear to have no shadow. The 9th Annual event will be held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on November 4 and 5, 2022 and virtually through an online marketplace.
