The average area burned per year in Hawai‘i has increased by 400% in the past century. While 98% of wildfires are caused by humans, the combination of unmanaged vegetation, residential areas not designed to prevent fire, and the challenges of global warming and drought further exacerbate the issue. In order to create a wildfire-resilient Hawai‘i, the Hawai‘i Wildfire Management Organization is working with communities across the state on a range of proactive and forward-thinking projects focused on wildfire mitigation, prevention, and planning. Mitigating the impact of wildfires is a statewide effort and everyone plays a role in keeping their communities, families, and homes safe.
