DOH gives green light to a third medical cannabis dispensary for Pono Life Maui

The Maui News

The state Department of Health has approved a third medical cannabis retail dispensary for Pono Life Maui after the Paia facility passed a final on-site inspection.

The new retail location is located at 149 Hana Highway, Unit No. 2, and expects to begin sales today.

“Pono Life Maui’s new dispensary will provide much needed access to patients on Maui,” Liam Gimon, supervisor of DOH’s Medical Cannabis License Program Section, said in a news release Tuesday.

The green light for the new facility brings the total number of licensed retail dispensaries on Maui to six — Maui Grown Therapies has three locations in Kahului, Lahaina and Pukalani, while Pono Life Maui now has three in Kahului, Wailuku and Paia.

Oahu has the most in the state with eight dispensaries, while Hawaii island has six and Kauai has two.

As of Oct. 31, a total of 33,540 in-state patients and 2,781 caregivers were registered statewide, according to DOH.

Registered patients and their caregivers may purchase up to four ounces of medical cannabis during a 15-consecutive day period and a maximum of eight ounces over a 30-consecutive day period. Medical cannabis must be brought home from a dispensary in a sealed container and not be visible to the public.

All use of medical cannabis must be on private property and may not be used in any moving vehicle, at work, at the beach, on hiking trails or in any other public space, according to DOH. It is illegal to use or possess medical cannabis on any federally owned property such as military installations and national parks.
