Proposed bill prevents illegal vacation homes from advertising

State Rep. Patrick Branco is introducing a bill that makes advertising for unlicensed goods and services illegal.

HB1516 affects businesses without state or county licensing. This would prevent illegal vacation rentals from promoting their services on cards, signs and media. Violators would be required to pay a fine of $500 to $10,000 per violation.

Rep. Branco also supports Honolulu’s Bill 41 regarding vacation rentals. The bill goes for a second hearing before the council this Wednesday.

Branco says HB1516 and Bill 41 are a result of resident complaints of tourists overcrowding residential neighborhoods and limiting housing.
