Hawaiian Electric is asking customers with past due accounts to set up payment plans to avoid having their service cut off at some time in the future.

Utility regulators have said a moratorium on disconnections will end Monday but the company said it won’t immediately start cutting off electricity to people behind on their bills.

“But customers are urged to act now to set up a payment plan to avoid disconnection in the future,” the company said.

Hawaiian Electric is urging customers to go to its website for options.

Thousands of customers who meet the threshold for getting their power cut will automatically roll their balances into 12-month payment plans, the company said.

“Those customers will receive a notice with their bill when the payment plan starts that explains how the arrangement works, including instructions on how to opt out,” Hawaiian Electric said.
