Maui County reported more than 7,000 new COVID cases over the last two weeks. Managing Director Sandy Baz says the county has the highest positivity rate in the state.

On Monday, Jan. 24, the county added a booster shot requirement for access to indoor events and restaurants.

Baz says the county is also distributing rapid test kids to residents. It just purchased about 22,000 tests.

"We've been distributing them at drive-thrus throughout the county, as well on all three islands," he said.

Those interested in getting self-test kits can go to the War Memorial Parking Lot in Wailuku from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The county will allow two test kits per person and six kits per vehicle.

"So people can come drive thru and pick up their own test kit and then test at home when they need to," Baz said.

The Conversation planned to hear from Mayor Mike Victorino but he went home sick Tuesday. His office later announced he tested positive for COVID-19.

Victorino is in isolation at home and close contacts were notified, his office said.

The state reported 331 new COVID-19 cases throughout Maui County on Wednesday. About 67% of the county population is fully vaccinated.
