HONOLULU (KITV4) - Homeowners or those in the building industry may be faced with faster permitting times.
The city's Permitting Director - Dean Uchida - said today during a Honolulu City Council Committee Meeting that it's in the process of revamping the entire permitting system, which has been notoriously slow.
For instance, the current average wait time between the approval and issuance of commercial permits is 117 days, which is up from 87 days last year.
A broken pneumatic tube, or capsule pipeline, which carries documents through the department's divisions, is one of the reasons for the delays.
The department's staffing shortage remains as another reason for the delays. It is also trying to change the way it receives payments by moving to an online payment system.
