WAIMANALO, Hawaii -- Second-degree murder charges have been filed against the adoptive parents of missing Isabella Kalua, who would have turned 7 years old last week.
The couple was arrested Wednesday, Isaac while working at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, and Lehua at their Puha Street home in Waimanalo during a raid shortly after 7 a.m.
Honolulu Police investigators believe Isaac and Lehua Kalua murdered Kalua in mid-August, a month before they reported her missing.
During an afternoon press conference Wednesday, HPD reported Kalua's parents lied in their initial report, which stated they last saw Kalua on Sept. 12 at around 9 p.m. when they put her to bed at their home.
After the couple reported Kalua missing on Sept. 13, HPD and Honolulu FBI personnel conducted an intensive, 8-day search for the child with the help of hundreds of volunteers from the community.
The investigation continued over the past two months, in which HPD investigators collected hours of surveillance footage from neighbors and nearby businesses, interviews with witnesses, and items that appear related to the case.
Police have not said what evidence or information they uncovered that ultimately led to the raid and the arrests.
"Some of the information may not be released at this time because it may hurt the integrity of the investigation," HPD Homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes said.
Kalua's remains have not yet been found, police said.
Crime scene technicians were called to the home searching for evidence in the investigation.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, reported hearing explosions and shots fired during the raid at the home on Puha Street. Police tell KITV4 there were no injuries during the raid and no shots or explosions occurred, and the loud noise reported by neighbors was the officers entering the home. SWAT was also involved in the raid.
Both Isaac and Lehua are being held without bail and are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Friday.
According to police, some of Kalua's four siblings were taken in under Child Welfare Services (CWS).
Investigators said they are still looking for information and witnesses to come forward. They also say they are looking for anyone who had contact with Isabella or the Kalua family between August and September.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Honolulu Crimestoppers at (808) 955-8300.
CWS is also looking for anyone who may have witnessed neglect or abuse in the Kalua family home. Their hotline is 1-888-380-3088.
This story will be updated when more information is released.
