Maui County Council to discuss regulating bike tours

Hawaii Public Radio

The Maui County Council Government Relations, Ethics, and Transparency Committee will discuss regulating bike tours in the north shore and upcountry areas of Maui tomorrow.

Bicycle tours operating in the Pāʻia-Haʻikū and Makawao-Pukalani-Kula community plan areas will be reviewed. Residents in the area have expressed concerns about bicycle tours crowding the roads.

Councilmember Mike Molina suggests limiting guided tours to six a day, with tour guides both in the front and back of the group. Unguided tours will not be allowed. Bike tours will also be limited in time.

Other suggestions include having riders sign a “bike pono” pledge to ride respectfully of nearby residents.

The meeting will take place Tuesday morning. More information can be found at mauicounty.us.
