A fourth Covid-19 vaccine is now available in Hawaii for people 18 and older, the state Department of Health announced Wednesday.

Novavax is a protein-based vaccine, which is considered more traditional than the three other Covid vaccines approved for use in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorsed the new vaccine last month, saying the ingredients are found in many foods such as fats, sugar and salts and are considered safe for most people.

The vaccine is given in two doses three to eights weeks apart. It’s not authorized for a booster shot yet, health officials said.

“Novavax gives us another way to protect ourselves from Covid-19. Its arrival is great news for people who are allergic to an ingredient in the mRNA vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna or those who, for whatever reason, have been reluctant to be vaccinated,” State Health Director Elizabeth Char said in a news release.

Vaccine scheduling opportunities are available at 5 Minute Pharmacy on Oahu and Safeway Pharmacy in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii island. Kaiser Permanente is also offering the vaccine to its members.

On Wednesday, Hawaii reported a seven-day Covid positivity rate of 12.4%, with 14 new deaths over the past week. 77.1% of the population has been fully vaccinated.
