Let’s get started.
Ask an Entrepreneur
How has Hawaii National Bank helped grow your business?
Alert Alarm Hawaii was originally at Waiwai Loop and had been in that facility for many years. We were notified in 2013 that we had to relocate our facility because of the rail system. Hawaii National Bank was instrumental in the construction, design and the approval of getting this building done.

As we grew to the outer islands, we actually needed to build our facilities there. So financing became very important to expand our operations so that we could actually get statewide distribution here in Hawaii. Hawaii National Bank helped us expand our business over the years, and understood our challenges because they’re a family run organization as well.

We started with Hawaii National Bank when we opened the business. They were with us at the beginning and they are still with us now.

Carousel is our pre-owned lease program that allows you to exchange cars frequently. Hawaii National Bank was first to really support us and they were really enthusiastic.

What excites you about the future of your business?
Our customers are very good. They're loyal. We have now a second or third generation coming because they remember coming as a keiki and now they're a parent or grandparent, believe it or not.

It's exciting because things are changing for the environment and for our island. It is very important for us to continue along those lines.

What I like about having a business like this, beyond the fact that it has the potential to grow, is all the creativity, all the dumb little ideas and all the great ideas and everything in between.

I think the biggest thing is in the United States there are over 10,000 security companies and Alert Alarm is ranked the 26th largest in the country. We’re very proud of that.

What do you love about Hawaii National Bank?
I would recommend Hawaii National Bank to small businesses because of the close working relationship we have with the staff there. You feel like you're one of the family. It's one-on-one. You're not bounced from one section to another section to another section. It's all encompassing there and I think that's the beauty of it.

Most banks nowadays, they've done so much with tech that some of that personal touch is missed. Hawaii National certainly retains that. And that's one of the key things that makes us so happy to be with them.

I think Hawaii National Bank really understands what it takes to run a family business. From their perspective, the individual family members, they don’t have a super huge corporate structure. And they understand that from our side, we're the same in that we’re family members that are in business and making a go of it.

The larger banks are very difficult to reach, to contact. And Hawaii National Bank is extremely easy to contact, speak to and work with on any situation or need that we have. From a financial perspective, they’re very responsive.
Roger Savage
Alert Alarm Hawaii
What qualities should entrepreneurs look for in a bank?
Banking has evolved over the years to being online and really lost that human contact and interaction that we often look for. The business really still relies on people. And the one thing about Hawaii National Bank is they've kept that human interaction with a personal banker. That has helped us and worked out well for us.

Alert Alarm Hawaii
A bank that adapts and learns. Hawaii National is definitely flexible–they start by learning about your business, and then they add to or contribute to your business with some new ideas. They're partners.

We had other bankers in the past that didn't believe in our mission and goals and the things we wanted to do back in the day. So we eventually came out to Hawaii National Bank, and they took a chance. Having a good banker is super important. I mean, they're sort of the financial backbone of the company.
Mike Sakamoto Jr.

It's important to have a good banker because you need to have someone hold the reins for you, hold the ropes for you. They're reliable, they're responsible, and they're responsive to your needs.
Liana Benn

What advice would you give someone starting a business?
I think it behooves us to serve the community. It's our responsibility, it's our kuleana to help out because we get back it somehow.
Liana Benn
Royal Kitchen
We didn't expect the company to grow over the last 40 years to the size that we are today. It is because of all the people and our crew, and that we actually do a good job getting products out there and continually pick up new products every year and add to our mix.
Mike Sakamoto Jr.

We're always thinking five to ten years ahead. You have to scale with a certain amount of pace. You don't want to be all blue sky.

What do people love about your business?
We bring the products to the grocery stores, we stock their shelves, we deliver their products. And so when you walk in to go get your favorite ice cream, for example, that's something that we deliver to the stores.
Mike Sakamoto Jr.

To have that large dealership feel when you come in to just buy something that you can afford, it feels good, I think, for a lot of people. And then to have the service component and all of that still provided when you're in that price point, I think it's really cool for people.

We are the go-to place for baked manapua. Parents pick up their manapua to greet their returning troops, their family members. College students would ask for it when they come back–when they hit the ground, it's either the manapua from us or Zippy’s Chili.
Liana Benn

We can pronounce the local streets, I think is the key, because the majority of our competitors actually monitor third party call centers in the mainland.

What characteristics do successful entrepreneurs need to have?
Running your business with a high degree of honesty, providing for your employees the best you can, and giving your customers something they might not have expected.

You can’t be afraid to put in the work. It’s easy to put money into something, but a real entrepreneur has to lay the foundation of their company, they have to teach their associates and employees the vision.
