In a joint announcement Thursday from Pali Lanes and Alexander & Baldwin, the two said bowling operations at the beloved Kailua bowling alley will cease June 30.

Owners Daniel Sylva and Arthur Machado recently approached Alexander & Baldwin to initiate closing discussions, according to a press release.

“It is with great sadness that we have to close the bowling center. The pandemic has taken its toll on us and we cannot sustain our business moving forward, despite the accommodations made by Alexander & Baldwin in recent years,” said Sylva.

Said Machado, “I will miss seeing the leagues, school groups, senior bowlers and special needs teams the most.”

The owners of Pali Lanes hold the ground lease at 120 Hekili Street, where Pali Lanes has operated for 60 years.

In 2013, Alexander & Baldwin assumed the lease when it purchased Kaneohe Ranch’s Kailua properties.

Lance Parker, executive vice president and chief real estate officer for A&B, said “We appreciate the Kailua community’s affinity for Pali Lanes and have worked closely with the owners by providing financial assistance in 2018 and 2019 as they sought to maintain a viable business and granting additional considerations in 2020 during their mandated shutdown.”

A&B said in the press release that it’s committed “to exploring ways” to preserve the Pali Lanes building and “finding uses that appeal to residents and surrounding local businesses.”
