The Kauai Humane Society completed the purchase of a 10-acre plot in Lihue where the shelter has operated since it started leasing the land and building its facilities on the site in the late 1990s.
KHS Board President Dan Giovanni called the acquisition a key step toward modernizing and expanding services, including the planned addition of a low-cost veterinary clinic.
The land was formerly owned by the development company Grove Farm.
KHS is the only animal shelter on Kauai that takes in animals regardless of their temperament or health status, including elderly, ill, aggressive or injured animals that may not easily attract new owners. The nonprofit shelter attained “no-kill” status in 2019.
