LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters on Maui are warning residents of a possible evacuation as they continue to battle a large brush fire that has scorched an estimated 2,100 acres in Lahaina.

At last check Thursday, the Maui Fire Department estimated the fire was 40% contained.

The flames are burning in mauka areas between Kahoma and Launiupoko.

According to the Maui Emergency Management Agency, a mandatory evacuation has not been ordered at this time and there is no immediate threat to homes or others structures.

But residents living in the upper portions of Launiupoko Subdivision should be aware that an evacuation may be possible if conditions worsen. Officials said a shelter location will be announced if and when it is opened.

Crews have been conducting water drops as steep and rough terrain continue to be a challenge. They will stay at the scene throughout the night.

At this time, there are also no road closures in place.

The blaze triggered the closure of four West Maui schools Wednesday. Those campuses reopened Thursday.

The fire broke out around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday near Kauaula Valley.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.
