An upcoming phase of the Kalanianā’ole Avenue Reconstruction project in Hilo is being delayed.
The state Department of Transportation announced Saturday that the portion of the project from Kamehameha/Railroad Avenue to Kauhane Avenue is now expected to begin in April because of contract and supply availability issues. Adjusting the start date will also allow time to pursue a noise variance so work can take place at night.
As mentioned in a press release earlier this month, the DOT will repave Kalanianā’ole Avenue between the vicinity of Verna’s Drive In and Hawai‘i Gas and will address select areas with a temporary pavement overlay to allow for future underground utility and drainage work by the county Department of Public Works.
Details about the areas and materials are:
Between Kamehameha Avenue and Silva Street: Paving of the riding course with hot mix asphalt.
Between Silva Street and Kauhane Avenue: Reconstruction with polymer-modified asphalt.
Connection to Kūhiō Street: Paving of the riding course with hot mix asphalt.
