Replacing paper passes, HOLO cards are the new way to pay on the bus

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new pass system is being implemented for riders of TheBus.

The old paper passes are being replaced with a new, modern HOLO card that riders can tap against a card reader when they enter the bus.

“This is a positive example of the city working to modernize its services and payment processes for the benefit of the community,” said Director Roger Morton, Department of Transportation Services. “The pandemic has taught us all that we are capable of adapting to change when necessary and we want riders to use the HOLO card the next few months to familiarize themselves with the card features.”

City officials said the HOLO card also features a fare-capping system that won’t charge riders after a second paid fare on a single day.

The HOLO cards will be the form of payment for Honolulu’s rail system, the city said.

A limited supply of cards are available on buses and at select retailers starting Thursday. Paper passes will be fully phased out by July 1.
