DOH, Navy investigating after fuel, water mixture leaked from Red Hill maintenance line

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Department of Health and Navy are investigating after about 30 gallons of a fuel and water mixture was released from a maintenance line connected to a tank at the Red Hill fuel storage facility.

The Navy said the release happened during a “maintenance activity” just after 12 p.m., and said that all leaked liquids were recovered with one of their sumps.

Officials said the release occurred during maintenance work to remove water from the underground storage tanks — an environmental control measure to avoid corrosion in the tanks.

DOH said the leak appeared localized, and the Navy said the Red Hill well remains secured.

“DOH responded to the incident immediately after we were notified,” said Kathleen Ho, Deputy Director of Environmental Health. “Today’s event underscores the importance of DOH and other regulatory agencies having oversight of Red Hill activities, especially around defueling and decommissioning the facility.”
