On behalf of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Hawaiʻi Pacific Chapter, I sincerely appreciate the time you spent with us for our first ever virtual and our second biennial Ho‘ohuli Awards on October 21, 2021. The Ho‘ohuli Awards exemplifies design excellence and celebrates local interior design talent, and this year was nothing short of that. The Ho‘ohuli Awards furthers IIDA’s vision to support culture and positively impact the health and well-being of people’s lives through a greater understanding of interior design.

Ho‘ohuli is a word that has deep meaning for our interior design community. In the Hawaiian language, Ho‘ohuli refers to the idea of change. This is, at heart, what excellent interior design achieves – the transformation of interior environments, and in turn, the transformation of the users who experience and are inspired by them. Interior design goes beyond the physical and often affects the unseen – functionality, health and wellbeing.

We, the IIDA, are leading the charge to be bolder. To be fresh. To stand out. To be dynamic. To be mentors. To be educators. To be visionaries. To be an inspiration. To be more. To do more. To give more. To educate more. To connect more. To accept change. To effect change. To lead change. We are Changemakers.

Still a young chapter of 5 years among a network of 15,000+ members across 58 countries, we continue to grow and evolve. For the coming year, we have curated and renewed opportunities for our local members as a response to our recent member survey, which includes two new, exciting Signature events – PechaKucha featuring the winners of the 2021 Ho‘ohuli Awards and Grindz & Findz, a sponsorship showcase. We will also continue to advocate, promote and honor equity, diversity and inclusion in the interior design industry as a representative of the newly formed IIDA Equity Council. Please frequent our website, and follow us on Instagram @iidahawaiipacific to remain informed. I look forward to engaging with you, whether virtually or in person at our next event.

Finally to our chapter members, sponsors, industry partners and volunteers, I cannot thank you enough for your continued support, generosity, and commitment to our organization. Together, let’s affect and effect change onward into 2022!

About IIDA Hawaiʻi Pacific Chapter

The Hoʻohuli Awards is Hawaiʻi’s only commercial interior design award and recognizes exceptional design work in the state. Held biennially, the 2021 Awards announced its winners in a virtual presentation on October 21, 2021.

In the Hawaiian language, ho‘ohuli refers to change. This can be interpreted as the transformation of spaces that an interior designer achieves, and the new experience clients or users of a space often feel once the vision is complete.

Started by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Hawai‘i-Pacific Chapter, the Ho‘ohuli Awards highlights Hawai‘i’s many talented professionals in the industry. Commercial interior design requires extensive training and knowledge and the awards highlight the complexity of the work with projects that deserve national and international recognition.

The Hawai‘i-Pacific Chapter was started in 2016, but its relationship with the IIDA began in 2005 when it began as a City Center affiliated with the Northern California Chapter. The growing presence of active members is a testament of the dedication to advancing the design community in Hawai‘i.

To be considered for the prestigious Ho‘ohuli Award, design firms were able to submit a project to one of eight different categories that include Work, Live, Play, Learn, Dine, Shop, Maker, and Against All Odds. Judging was performed anonymously by three esteemed interior designers based outside of Hawai‘i, including Mike Johnson of Perkins & Will Washington, DC, Angie Lee of Pembroke, and Mavis Wiggins of TPG Architecture.

Congratulations to all of the 2021 Ho‘ohuli Award Winners for showcasing the highest quality of commercial design excellence in Hawai‘i.
