Man arrested after hours-long barricade in Kapahulu

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A barricade situation has ended after HPD was seen arresting a man outside the apartment complex where they had been negotiating for nearly 10 hours.

According to HPD’s Captain Parker Bode, the situation started at 4:15 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a man with an outstanding warrant who was possibly armed in an apartment complex.

According to Bode, HPD’s Specialized Services Division or SWAT and its Criminal Investigation Division were on-scene negotiating with the man.

“These situations are real fluid. I’ve seen them last anywhere from minutes to hours long. So as far as timeframe, I can’t give a timeframe as to when it’s going to end,” said Bode.

All residents living around the apartment complex were evacuated.

For us, it started around 5:00 this morning. We heard (a police officer) on a loudspeaker and we saw police waiting at the bottom of the stars — watching to see if they come out. They did that a few more times and they told us to get away — to go towards the door. Then SWAT said they would come and get us and escort us out.”

Neighbors like Silver are finding ways to stay positive as police work to get the situation resolved.

“We’re holding up OK,” said Silver. “Food truck would’ve been good, but now we’ve invested this much time, I don’t want to miss anything. We’d like to see the conclusion. I hope they get it done and it improves the neighborhood a little bit.”

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and avoid the area.
