Track and bleacher repairs will force a seventh-month closure of Central Maui’s main stadium and track facility.

The War Memorial Football Stadium and Satoki Yamamoto Track and Field Facility in Wailuku will be closed from Oct. 2 through May 4 while it undergoes repair projects, the county Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.

Projects will include track resurfacing and repainting; pole vault runway resurfacing; long jump renovation, repairs and resurfacing; Paia bleacher chain-link fence demolition and replacement; and bleacher concrete spall repairs.

The closure and repairs will impact a number of schools and athletic programs that use the facilities; the final regular-season game scheduled for War Memorial Stadium is Oct. 1 when Maui High and Baldwin High face off.

The Maui Interscholastic League is supposed to host the state track and field championships May 5-6 at War Memorial Stadium.

The facility has been undergoing a major refresh in recent years. In 2020, the entire War Memorial Stadium parking lot was closed from March to August for a project to repave the 51-year-old lot and upgrade it from 765 to 807 stalls. Prior to then, the parking lot hadn’t had any major repair work since it opened alongside the stadium in 1969.

Maui County is asking the public to remain outside of construction area barriers during the repair project for their safety.
