HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Commission voted Wednesday to approve the use of taxpayer funds to cover the legal fees of three officers charged in the fatal shooting of a teen.

Officers Zackary Ah Nee, Christopher Fredeluces and Geoffrey Thom have already secured well-known attorneys. The officers are paying their legal expenses right now, but commission’s vote sets up a process for public funds to be used to cover legal fees for the three.

Thom is charged with murder in the April 5 shooting of Iremamber Sykap.

Ah Nee and Fredeluces are charged with attempted murder.

The officers’ lawyers have also filed a motion to dismiss the charges due to the grand jury’s decision to not charge the officers with a crime.

They face life in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted.
