Maui Mayor Mike Victorino has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the second Hawaii mayor to be infected with the highly contagious disease. Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth tested positive last month.

Maui County did not reveal when the Victorino received a positive test result, but the county said the mayor has been vaccinated, including with a booster shot.

Victorino’s symptoms are mild and he is being isolated in his home, according to a press release. The release did not mention whether the mayor is able to perform all of his functions.

The mayor issued a statement calling on residents to continue to adhere to Covid-19 prevention methods to help protect the island’s medical facilities and their staff from becoming overwhelmed.

“Even though breakthrough infections can still happen, boosters minimize chances for severe illness and hospitalization,” Victorino said.
