Respondents in both surveys were asked about their personal Covid-19 vaccination status.

Boss Survey 8

  • Among the general public, Native Hawaiians are the ethnic group least likely to get the shots: Only 68% have been fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, 91% of Japanese and 80% of Caucasians polled are fully vaccinated.
  • Less educated segments of the sample are the least likely to have been vaccinated. For example, 73% of those polled without a college degree are fully vaccinated. This number increases to 91% among college graduates.
  • 96% of seniors are fully vaccinated, while only 73% of those under the age of 35 have been vaccinated.

Are You Worried?

Each respondent was asked about their level of concern regarding contracting Covid-19 themselves or someone in their household being infected.

Boss Survey 11

*dk/da: Didn’t know or didn’t answer | **Only 4% when we asked the question in April 2021.

Among the general public:

  • 49% of Neighbor Islanders are very worried about themselves or someone in their household becoming infected, compared with 26% of O‘ahu residents.
  • Among ethnic groups, just 25% of Caucasians are very worried. This percentage rises to 38% among Japanese and 41% among Native Hawaiians.
  • Age is also a factor: 50% of adults under the age of 35 are very worried. This percentage slowly declines with age until it bottoms out at 26% among seniors.
  • 42% of people born and raised in Hawai‘i are very worried, compared with 19% of transplants to the state.

Vaccination Policies On The Job

Each respondent was asked if their place of employment has a vaccination policy.

Boss Survey 9

In the BOSS Survey of business leaders, the larger the company, the more likely it is to have a vaccination policy: 38% of medium-size businesses have one, as do 49% of large businesses.

Next, we asked about those workplaces that have a vaccination policy: What best describes it?

Methodology for BOSS Survey and 808 Poll, Fall 2021

BOSS – the Business Outlook and Sentiment Survey – is a statewide survey of business leaders in Hawai‘i. The 808 Poll is a survey of the general public in Hawai‘i. Both surveys are conducted twice a year for Hawaii Business Magazine by the research team at Anthology Marketing Group.

The BOSS research was conducted using a sample listing of businesses purchased from a third-party business sample provider as well as Hawaii Business Magazine’s Top 250 list and classified business listings.

The sample of business executives was stratified based on the number of employees in their companies. Small businesses are divided into two subgroups: Businesses with two to nine employees are designated as “very small” and those with 10 to 49 employees are designated as “small.” Medium-size companies are those with 50 to 99 employees while companies with 100 or more employees are classified as “large.”

The goal was to complete interviews with executives heading 50 businesses in each of the large and medium sectors, and 300 interviews in the two small-business categories. The data was weighted to reflect the proper proportions of each company segment based on the number of employees as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

A total of 420 random interviews on all the major islands were conducted from Oct. 7 to Oct. 25, 2021. A sample of this size has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.88 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

A tourism industry survey within the overall BOSS survey elicited responses from 111 business executives who describe their companies as deriving significant proportions of their revenues from the visitor industry.

Future Methodology for 808 Poll

The research team at Anthology Marketing Group conducted an online survey based on a sample of email addresses purchased from a third-party supplier that specializes in such samples for online surveys. This sample was augmented by Anthology’s proprietary panel of respondents who have agreed to take part in surveys.

A total of 482 surveys statewide were completed from Oct. 7 to Oct. 11, 2021. The resulting data was weighted to reflect population estimates of adults 18 and older on each island.

The margin of error for a total sample of this size is plus or minus 4.46 percentage points with a 95% confidence level. Each respondent was screened to ensure they were at least 18 years of age and resided on the island for which they were being contacted.
