The hallways and classrooms of the newly renovated Honolulu Museum of Art School will soon be abuzz with excitement and anticipation once again as the museum brings back studio art classes after a two-year hiatus. Online registration opens on July 12 for museum members at the Contributing level and up, and July 13 for the public. Classes begin September 1.

“We are thrilled to be opening back up,” said Studio Manager Joseph Smeraldi. “Our faculty of full-time art instructors is developing a fresh new curriculum inspired by and connected to the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. For students, visits to our galleries will be a part of each course offering in order to connect the studio learning experience with a deeper understanding of art history, and to the creative process of artists through the ages.”

During the Art School’s closure, HoMA had a chance to reconfigure and update its classrooms, including the addition of a state-of-the-art glazing studio and kiln house. “We doubled the size of the ceramics studio and incorporated a glazing studio,” said Learning and Engagement Director Aaron Padilla. “The addition of a glazing studio is highly valuable to the overall ceramics process, allowing us to focus on the crucial steps of surface design and glazing techniques.”

The school’s print studio has also been upgraded with a space dedicated to screen printing as well as five new relief printing presses. There is a new studio dedicated to textiles with a set of Saori looms, two studios dedicated to general studio art, and four drawing and painting studios.

The museum will offer courses in ceramics, printmaking, metalsmithing, textiles, drawing and painting, and a General Survey Art Exploration class. The course curriculum is designed for a wide range of abilities, experience, and expertise.
