Blood Bank of Hawaii opened its doors during the midst of World War II and has since served as Hawaii’s sole community blood bank. Fast forward 80 years and Blood Bank of Hawaii utilizes state-of-the-art collection, testing and distribution systems to provide safe blood products to all 18 civilian hospitals statewide.

While Hawaii patients can rest assured that their medical needs are being met, the fighting taking place in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on every aspect of life, including their blood donation industry.

As a result of the war, blood banks and transfusion centers there are struggling as facilities and supplies are destroyed or damaged. In a show of solidarity, Blood Bank of Hawaii invites new and current donors to join the nationwide effort to provide essential blood supplies and equipment to Ukraine.

From Monday, April 25 through Sunday, May 8, BBH will make a financial donation to the Blood Centers of America Foundation on behalf of every blood, platelet and plasma donation made during that period.

The campaign hopes to raise $5,000 locally. This donation has the possibility of being doubled to $10,000 thanks to a matching offer. In partnership with Blood Centers of America and America’s Blood Centers, the national campaign goal is to raise $250,000, which will be matched one-to-one up to $250,000 by industry partner Fresenius Kabi.

Oahu donors can donate at the Young Street Donor Center, Dillingham Donor Center, or at a bloodmobile located at Waikele Center, Windward Mall and Kapolei Commons.

For more information or to register to donate, visit bbh.org or call 808-848-4770.
