WAILUKU, Hawaii (KITV4) -- High school graduations are a milestone tradition, often celebrated with the gift of lei giving to mark the occasion.
However, a high school recently announced that loved ones can not give out leis at their upcoming graduation.
KITV4 received a copy of a letter sent by the Department of Education to parents on Tuesday -- that Baldwin High School in Wailuku will not allow lei and gift giving before, during, or after the ceremony.
The letter sent April 12 from Baldwin High School officials states, “There will be no lei/gift giving allowed at any time before, during, or after the ceremonies, including in the parking lot. Graduates and guests will be required to leave the premises immediately after the ceremony. We encourage families to hold their own lei-giving events at their private residences instead.”
We reached out to the DOE but haven't heard back yet.
