Leah Ibew Headshot FinalLeah Peters
General Foreman

“Women aren’t in this field.” If Leah Peters had a dollar for every time someone said that, she would be rich. Peters, 50, General Foreman for Pacific Power Electrical Corp., knew from a young age that she wanted to do something different, and becoming an Electrician has been a journey from day one.

Peters has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for 30 years, with half of her career in IBEW Local 73 (Washington), and the second half in IBEW Local 1186 (Hawaii). “I knew that if I decided to try to go into the trades, it would only be union.

The IBEW ticked all the boxes!” said Peters. To add to this ideal job in her opinion, was the ability to travel. “Mainly, I wanted to be able to travel the country and the world, with my retirement, medical and future financial well-being not beholden to any one company,” recalls Peters.

From being an apprentice to a Superintendent, every position Peters has held in the IBEW presented its own set of challenges, but through it all, Peters worked hard to hone her craft and to be a steadfast union brother or sister. Says Peters, “Do it-but do it with your whole heart and a dedication to the Brotherhood as if it really is your blood brother next to you. Don’t just think of it as a hiring hall – it is so, so much more than that. Become engaged.”

Side note: Peters met her husband, Matt Turner, while working in Alaska on the ground-based missile defense center. He is a member of IBEW Local 1547 (Alaska).

Peters looks forward to retirement for one reason – to be able to volunteer. Since she took her first trip to Uganda in 2003, it is her passion and her “why,” and she and husband Matt have since tried to incorporate volunteer, community and/or environmental work with each yearly trip they take together. “My heart lives in Africa,” says Peters. Her goal is to give villages a sustainable, reliable power source. Says Peters, “With luck, my future will hold a new chapter of volunteer efforts full time, both here in Hawai’i, the mainland and abroad.”

So the next time someone tells you, “Women aren’t supposed to do that!” If you feel so inspired, just answer, “Leah did it.”

Suzie Schulberg HeadshotfinalSuzie Schulberg
President & CEO, Arcadia Family of Companies

The Arcadia Family of Companies (AFC) offers a full spectrum of senior living options through its subsidiaries – resident communities 15 Craigside and Arcadia; Arcadia Adult Day Care & Day Health Center at Central Union Church; Arcadia Home Health Services; and Arcadia At Home. In addition, The Arcadia Foundation is a 501(c)(3), created to help seniors in need.

As President and CEO, Suzie Schulberg is responsible for the overall operations and success of all entities, overseeing a staff of 560 and serving as guardian for the 1,000-plus kupuna AFC cares for each day. Under Suzie’s leadership, AFC has continued to grow and carry out its mission: To provide senior living excellence in a gracious, compassionate, and dynamic environment which meets the spiritual, physical and social needs of every resident, client, and member served.

Throughout her 20-plus year career with AFC, Suzie has made invaluable contributions to the company, which in turn, has had a positive impact on how we, as a community, care for our kupuna and their families. As President and CEO, Suzie is responsible for every aspect contributing to the overall success of AFC and its seven subsidiaries.

Suzie’s ability to lead her staff in keeping residents, clients, members and employees safe during the COVID19 pandemic was certainly tested and required implementing unprecedented safeguards (some beyond what CDC and Hawai‘i DOH suggested); collaborating with State/County agencies, industry leaders, and other senior caregiving companies to share best practices and updated guidelines; keeping residents and their families informed; and keeping her 560 employees engaged and diligent even in light of the uncertainties and life threatening dangers COVID19 presented.

The COVID19 pandemic hit senior service providers especially hard. It was one of Suzie’s most challenging times in her career. She successfully navigated the pandemic, keeping her kupuna/staff safe by implementing progressive and effective programs including:

  • Having the foresight to anticipate a shortage in Personal Protective Equipment. The AFC secured ample equipment and cleaning supplies.
  • Becoming Hawai‘i’s first aging services organization to voluntarily conduct organization-wide monthly interval COVID-19 testing. All 560 employees are COVID-19 tested every month. As needed, this was extended to residents’/employees’ families as well.
  • Extensive internal and external communications to residents/clients/members and their families, and employees to share safety protocols, provide updated information and educational materials.

Suzie currently serves on the Policy Advisory Board for Elderly Affairs (since 2013); the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society (since 2003, receiving her Advanced Certificate in Geronotology from University of Hawai‘i in 2003); as a board member of Oahu Workforce Development Board; is a member of Pacific Business News Forty Under 40 (2014) and Pacific Century Fellow (2010); and most recently, was accepted into the Omidyar Fellows Program (Cohort VIII) and the Pacific Business News Women Who Mean Business.

Leian Harosky HeadshotfinalLeian Harosky
Harosky Homes

Leian Harosky brings decades of experience to the local real estate landscape, and the brokers are dedicated to helping current and prospective homeowners make their dreams come true at Harosky Homes.

The Harosky Homes team features experts in home buying and selling, 1031 exchanges, short sales and Veterans Affairs (V.A.) home purchases.

“I’ve been in the business for more than 18 years and I still have the same passion from then to now. Harosky Homes’ end goal is to help the public with their real estate needs. Our mission is to provide clients with the proper education to protect their real estate investment, and we do that by conducting free real estate seminars and one on one consultation which I highly recommend since everyone has different real estate end goals and Portfolio”.

Leian Harosky is multilingual. After growing up with a diverse family and being exposed to various cultures, she learned how to adapt quickly, be respectful and think out of the box when helping people.

“My diverse background helps me to connect with all sorts of people, and a lot of my clients that I have assisted have been able to resell their properties and make money because of our strategies and brainstorming sessions,” Harosky says. “I’m also a real estate investor with experience working internationally, as well with the U.S. State Department US Embassy in Asia assigning housing for Military Diplomats and Foreign Service Officers. So with that government and corporate background, I learned how to be discreet and diplomatic.”

Harosky recalls that, at just 28 years old, when she worked at a U.S. Embassy in an Islamic country, she had a coveted security clearance and received vital training. This experience helped her build relationships with multiple countries and an array of people as she kept up with foreign affairs and assisted those working at the embassy with housing needs.

Harosky Homes includes four retired military officers on its team, Leian explains the diversity within the company shines through as everyone can speak different languages. She says the staff can speak Tagalog, Mandarin, Malay, Indonesian, Spanish, Italian, Thai and Korean to further assist clients.

The American Veterans Association in Hawaii selected Harosky as a V.A. Educator, so she is accustomed to helping residents from various backgrounds.

Harosky Homes invites the public to attend their monthly real estate education seminars, and talk about all the details involved with the process so prospective clients are ready when looking to buy and sell properties, as well as learn about rental property strategies, and Oahu market trends.

“We focus on the client and their intentions. It’s all about you,” Leian Harosky says. “We educate you first with a true team effort, and we’re going to provide the crucial education to equip clients with achieving their real estate goals, whether it’s a home to retire in or an investment. I grew up on a farm, so that helps me remain grounded and down to earth. We treat the business and our clients like a family.”
