Utah man arrested not once, but twice for violating Kauai’s traveler quarantine
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai police have arrested a Utah man a second time for violating the mandatory traveler quarantine.
Police say 50-year-old David Barnes of Bountiful, Utah arrived on Kauai on Dec. 28.
He had no reservations for lodging accommodations and was told he needed to make some before he could leave the airport. He booked a room at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort in Kapaa.
And with no means of transportation, he left the airport on foot and was later seen shopping at Costco in Lihue.
He was arrested and later released on $1,000 bail, and required to complete the 10-day quarantine period.
Then on Jan. 5, after checking in to the Kauai Inn in Lihue, authorities once again received reports that Barnes was out and about and he was subsequently arrested a second time.
He remains at the Kauai Community Correction Center on $11,000 in bail where he faces three more counts of breaking COVID emergency rules, and one count of trespassing.
To date, Kauai officials say police have made 192 arrests of quarantine violators. All individuals who are arrested are subject to up to one year in jail and/or up to $5,000 in fines.
Meanwhile, KPD is still being aided by Hawaii National Guard personnel where checkpoints are up at the Lihue Airport.
