HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Newly-elected US Rep. Kai Kahele delivered his first floor speech in Congress on Wednesday, joining the push to remove President Trump from office.

Kahele got 30 seconds to weigh in on whether to impeach the President following the Capitol violence.

In his speech, he said Trump violated his oath of office by inciting a “deadly insurrection.”

“Our sacred oaths are hollow without accountability,” Kahele said.

“We must hold this president accountable, remove him from office, ensure he can never hold public office again. I urge my colleagues to vote the same. This oath has to matter.”

All four members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation support the removal of Trump from office before his term ends Jan. 20, though that appears unlikely.

Kahele and US Rep. Ed Case both voted in support of Trump’s impeachment Wednesday.

In a statement, Case said the president “gravely endangered the security of the United States and the institutions of government. ... This is a deeply troubling and sad day and week for me.”

While the House approved the impeachment resolution, with a historic bipartisan vote, the Senate has signaled it won’t take it up until after Joe Biden is inaugurated as president or shortly before.

Trump faces a single charge, “incitement of insurrection,” after telling a mob of loyalists to “fight like hell” against election results. The subsequent attack on the U.S. Capitol turned deadly.

Ten Republicans supported impeachment along with the Democrats.

In a statement, US Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said the Senate “now has an obligation to act quickly, consider these charges and conduct a fair trial.”

Trump is the first president to ever be impeached twice.
