HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - MMA fighter BJ Penn was arrested this weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence after an incident at a private business.

Hawaii Island police say the arrest happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

Hamakua police officers responded to the private business in Honoka’a. Officers learned Penn was at the business earlier in a gray Toyota pickup truck. They say the 42-year-old was talking loudly towards employees before driving off in a “reckless manner.”

While police were at the business speaking to employees, they say Penn returned. Officers noted he was showing signs of impairment and he was subsequently arrested.

It’s unclear what initially caused the apparent disagreement between Penn and the business.

He was later released pending further investigation.

Penn last made headlines in 2019, following video of him fighting outside a Big Island bar. He was later removed from the UFC roster, with UFC President Dana White saying Penn’s career was over.
