PUHI — The urgency of the final weekend before Christmas helped push cars smoothly through the drive-thru, no-contact food distribution Saturday at the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center.
“There is about an hour remaining, and we’ve only about a hundred cars left to serve,” said Eddie Topenio, a volunteer with the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council who teamed up with Melissa Ragasa of the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch to direct traffic at the center.
The KFCC partnered with the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch to provide food and fellowship to more than 350 families in the days leading to Christmas.
“This was kind of last-minute,” said Charlmaine Bulosan of the KFCC.
“We needed to be sure everyone had food for the holidays, so we put this together. At 350 families, this is more than the 300 families we took care of during the earlier food drive.”
Among the food offerings in the Saturday distribution was a donation of fresh, locally-produced shrimp from Kaua‘i Shrimp, said Wes Perreira, Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch manager.
An estimated 10,000 pounds of food was distributed.
The foodbank’s schedule was jammed due to its helping with the Rice Street Business Association’s drive-in movie at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e, where donated, nonperishable food benefited the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Branch.
